How the Leadership Programme works

Empowerment          Education          Encouragement

A simple solution with a big impact – Appointing a Leadership Director. The role of the leadership director is to focus on leadership, character education and self-development for students in the school. Needless to say, every leadership director must fit the vision and culture of your school to communicate and role model inspirational and commonsense based messages to the students on a regular and ongoing basis.

The power of a name – A leadership director is like a life coach for young people. The Leadership Director will offer encouragement and guidance to the students and will assist in connecting students to the right people in the school to get assistance where required, for example a dean, counsellor, pastoral guide, careers advisor, subject specialist teachers, and student leaders. The leadership director is different from a dean, counsellor and pastoral guide in schools. Like a leadership director, deans, counsellors and pastoral guides, are also used to guide and support students, but deans also manage many other aspects of school life as well as contacting whanau (families), student discipline, and in many cases teaching their own subjects. These days many schools also have counsellors and pastoral guides, which is fantastic, and definitely encouraged alongside a leadership director. Deans can be used for student discipline, counsellors can be used for trauma, and pastoral guides can have a focus on religious or spiritual wellbeing, whereas the leadership director is inspirational in the way they coach and encourage young people to be their best selves with a focus on leadership and life lessons.

The programme is voluntary for all students, with the understanding students have many other important commitments within their chosen subjects and in the wider life of school. Students are encouraged to attend Leadership Programme seminars for their year group that are run twice a term, (approx every 10 weeks). The seminars are held at school outside of school hours in the evenings.
