THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

The Leadership Programme

The Leadership Programme was introduced to Palmerston North Boys’ High School in 2006, along with the appointment of a Leadership Director. ​The Leadership Programme is about the empowerment of youth, our future citizens and leaders, through character education and self development in an educational setting through an initiative called the Leadership Programme. The Leadership Programme promotes good sense and inspirational teaching through the means of a Leadership Director in secondary schools across New Zealand and worldwide.

At Palmerston North Boys' High School, where the Leadership Programme began, the programme has seen increased opportunities for student leadership across both curriculum and co-curricular areas, as well as responsibility within programmes such as peer mentoring and tutoring. This has seen increased opportunities for students to develop in character and confidence as they have progressed in to the senior school.​ Increased involvement in school and community service, as well as the full suite of pastoral, sports and cultural activities our young men undertake on their journey to becoming educated men of outstanding character also continue to contribute to developing their character and confidence. Almost two decades of character education, the Leadership Programme continues to positively shape our young men in a world where the challenges facing our young men are never ending.

The Leadership Programme is important because this is a new day in society where people are valued for whatever their part is in the bigger picture of life and what their passions are.​ Education has an important role in empowering the next generation to see everyone as equal but each with their significant and unique qualities and roles to contribute to society.​ The Leadership Programme can help with this because it is an effective way to change the stigma of 'cutting down tall poppies'. ​The Leadership Programme is unique because of the messages it will enable secondary schools to have through the appointment of a Leadership Director to teach on character and development in an educational setting and thus relating the messages to the importance of learning knowledge.​
